The 1980s was an incredible era for cars. Automakers were coming out with bold designs, performance was getting more powerful, and there were some styles that were unforgettable. It’s why vehicles from the 80s still have so much of a following. That said, there is a chance for some of the cars from the 80s to make a comeback in today’s world. Carmakers today could revolutionize some of the most popular rides and add the latest technology. Think of the possibilities. So, here are five cars from the 1980s I’d love to see make a return.
1. DeLorean DMC-12
This is a car I’ve always wanted to own. The DeLorean DMC-12 is a pop culture icon, thanks to its starring role in Back to the Future. Its stainless-steel body and gull-wing doors made it one of the most recognizable cars of the decade. A 2025 version could feature a fully electric powertrain, giving it the speed it always deserved. With modern lightweight materials, it could also shed some of its original weight and improve performance. Smart technology like autonomous driving and augmented reality displays would make it a true futuristic ride. Maybe Elon Musk would take on a futuristic EV DeLorean (I’d buy it).
2. Buick Grand National GNX
The Buick Grand National GNX was one of the meanest muscle cars of the 1980s, with a turbocharged V6 that embarrassed many V8s of its time. A modern reboot could bring this beast back with an electrified twin-turbo setup, delivering insane torque and acceleration. Keeping its signature all-black look with a modern aerodynamic twist would make it a head-turner. Advanced all-wheel-drive technology could improve handling while maintaining its drag-racing heritage. The GNX was once called the “Darth Vader” of muscle cars, and a 2025 version could prove why that title still holds.
3. Toyota MR2
Toyota had some absolute bangers in the 80s. The MR2 was a lightweight, mid-engine sports car that delivered fun, affordable performance. A 2025 version could compete with modern roadsters like the Mazda MX-5 and Porsche 718 Cayman. Hybrid or electric powertrains would make it both environmentally friendly and thrilling to drive. A sharper, more aggressive design could bring it in line with Toyota’s GR performance lineup.
4. Ford Bronco II
With the Ford Bronco making a successful return, it’s time for the Bronco II to get its own modern revival. The original Bronco II was a compact, rugged SUV designed for adventure seekers. A 2025 version could be an off-road-ready, hybrid-powered SUV that competes with the Jeep Wrangler. It could keep its boxy design but integrate modern tech like a digital cockpit and advanced terrain management systems. It’d be a great addition to Ford’s current lineup and it’d be popular among outdoor enthusiasts.
5. Nissan 300ZX
Nissan is another manufacturer that had some amazing cars in the 80s. The Nissan 300ZX was a sleek, turbocharged sports car that offered impressive performance and futuristic styling. A 2025 version could use Nissan’s latest turbocharged V6 or even an electric setup for instant torque. Keeping its iconic T-top roof would add nostalgia while improving its appeal to new buyers. An aggressive redesign with modern aerodynamics would help it compete with today’s sports cars.
80s Classics Reimagined for the Future
I’d love to see these five cars from the 80s reimagined in the modern world. It’d be so cool to see cult classics like the DeLorean back on the road with today’s technology on board. Additionally, some of these vehicles would be made so much better with EV technology and other features that come standard in cars these days.
